Halifax is on the final year of a three-year federal grant program to speed up the construction of homes. The Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) required Halifax to approve 15,467 building permits, and two-thirds of the way through the program 12,025 permits have been issued, or 78%.

At a council meeting on Jan. 13, Margie Pike, manager of Transformation and Innovation in Planning and Development, said she didn’t want to steal too much thunder from information that’s coming to council during budget season. But right now, said Pike, 14,500 homes are under construction, with 800 nearing completion, and last year, about 4,300 homes were built. Pike said that was 37% more than were built in 2024. Using those numbers, approximately 7009 homes have been built over the past two years.
