New stadium to have parking, flushing toilets

“As a City that considers itself one of Canada’s best, it is safe to say we deserve to flush,” read the last slide of Derek Martin’s pitch to council on for a stadium on the Wanderer’s Grounds at council last Tuesday. Martin, the president of the Halifax Wanderers, emphasized the lack of running water and permanent bathrooms at the current location, arguing that these are unfit conditions for professional athletes.

Martin wants to privately fund a new stadium on the Wanderer’s Grounds and separate community sports hub for training at the publicly owned Maybank field in Dartmouth to the tune of $100 million.

The only thing Martin needs from the city is public land. Not to own, but to lease; for 99 years. He stated that the Wanderer’s Grounds have been a dedicated space for sporting events since 1882 and, before the current pop up stadium, the site was in a state of disrepair. Martin stressed that this stadium would in fact increase community field time in the HRM.
